unexpected holiday

A seriously bad storm came through DC last Friday night. Apparently, DC hasn't seen a storm like this ever, not including hurricanes, which is what it seemed like. It was called a "derecho" storm. Here's a link from a go-to, super-credible source to learn more about "derecho" storms: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derecho

Sean and I were watching a movie around 10:45PM when we started to hear wind gust down the street outside. We often hear wind when it's stormy, but this wind gust did not seem to stop or get softer by the second, as it normally does. Some crazy maternal instinct in me jumped off of the couch and ran into our bedroom where Teags was sleeping. After I got to her, I stood there thinking, "What were you planning to do?" I certainly didn't want to wake her up given that nothing was actually happening inside of our apartment. I laughed out loud to Sean, feeling a little silly at my knee-jerk reaction...

After I calmed myself down, we grabbed some candles, closed the storm windows and opened the blinds to watch the events unfold outside. What's weird is that, from our perspective, the storm only lasted about 45 minutes but on Saturday we woke up to find that it had caused some major damage with it's 80 mile per hour winds. Sadly, some people even died.

We never did lose power, and come to think of it, we haven't ever lost power in this apartment, even when "snowmaggedon" came through in February 2010 or when we had our crazy earthquake last year. I've heard it's because in the District, all of the power lines are underground. This makes sense to me, and I'm thankful.

I'm also thankful that for some reason my office, which is in DC, did lose power- which gave me two extra days off of work this week- paid! I took advantage of the nanny on Monday and was able to clean the house deeply, something that is hard to do when you're working around a baby's schedule. I think I made up for it today though; Teags and I have done a lot!! Hope you enjoy the pics:

Inspired by my workout daughter, I decided to go for a jog. In the 100° heat. Probably not my smartest move.

Teags didn't seem to mind. She had her trusty hat on and loved watching the people go by.

Cooling down afterwards in Kalorama Park.

Dad took a study break and joined us for a nice cold drink.

Apparently her bottle wasn't enough. She is SO interested in anything that we put into our mouths.

Not to disappoint, we decided to try some green beans once we got home.

Even though a lot of them ended up on her face (mommy: fail), she seemed to absolutely dig the green beans!
Helping prepare dinner (on Monday night).
I wish that I could adequately describe the awesomeness of the sound that accompanies this view in person.
Such a peaceful silence.
